At the end of World War II, Germany was divided into 4 sectors. The 4 sectors soon became two countries: East Germany and West Germany.
The city of Berlin also was divided. France, Great Britain and the United States occupied the west sectors, which became West Berlin. The Soviet Union occupied the eastern sectors of Berlin, which became East Berlin.
After thousands of people fled to West Berlin, the Communist government of the Soviet Union tried to stop the defections by building a cement wall topped with barbed wire between East and West Berlin. Special permission was required to cross to the West. Guards, who were posted along the Berlin Wall, were ordered to shoot anyone trying to defect. Many died trying to cross this barrier.
On November 9, 1989, people were once again allowed to move freely throughout Berlin and Germany. The German people celebrated by tearing down the Wall. The fall of the Berlin Wall marked the end of the Cold War.
One young girl celebrated by the 30th anniversary of the event by memorializing the Year 1989.
She created a poster on which she listed all the one-digit, two-digit, and three-digit numbers she could make from the number 1989.
How many numbers did she come up with?
