Prefixes and Geometry
Listed below are the numbers 1 through 10. Each of these numbers has a prefix associated with it that is used to form words. Remember, a prefix is attached to the beginning of a word, base or phrase, and serves to create a derivative word. Knowing the meaning of a prefix may help you understand the meaning of a word. For example, a unicycle has one wheel. A trilogy consists of three parts. An octopus has eight legs.

A polygon is a two-dimensional figure with three or more straight sides. Polygons are classified according to the number of sides they contain. For example, polygons with 8 sides are called "octagons."

Use the table of prefixes to help you determine the names of polygons with 3 to 10 sides. If you are not sure of a name, make an educated guess and then check your guess in your math textbook.
