Good question! A trivet is a mosaic square that can be used as a decorative hanging, spoon rest or hot plate for the kitchen. Trivets are easy and fun to make, using a method of mosaic called “the indirect method.” In the indirect method, you arrange your pattern pieces before you glue them down (the “direct method” calls for gluing as you lay down each piece).
The first step in making a trivet is to decide on the size and the pattern. Divide a piece of 8 1/2" x 11" tracing paper into one-inch squares, completely covering the paper.
How many full one-inch squares will fit on your tracing paper?
